The Renaissance Montessori Logo

The logo was conceived of by Lynette Engle of Eyes Right Design, who thought the transition from a caterpillar to a butterfly epitomized a rebirth or 'Renaissance'. She suggested that in the safety and warmth of the school (symbolized by the cocoon), the child emerges as a fully developed being ready to explore the world with its newly found powers.

In choosing the name Renaissance we had in mind the transition Lynette so well symbolized, but also had in mind the notion of a 'Renaissance Man', the person who is very well versed in many disciplines (thus our classical academic curriculum made replete with the major components of the arts--music, dance, visual art). Also the name 'Renaissance' is associated with the rise of reason and culture as in the Italian Renaissance and the Harlem Renaissance.

There is a distinct connection between early efforts to control one's body and the later ability to mentally control, to make judgments, to act according to consequences. This is the tie between Practical Life and intellectual independence and judgment.
